York Art Gallery Facade Four Carved Roundels m01
The image shows the four portrait medallions (roundels) located on the spandrels of the loggia at the front of the York Art Gallery building. Each roundel contains the carved facial likeness of a key figure in the world of art and architecture, namely:
- the musician John Camidge,
- the sculptor John Flaxman,
- the artist / painter William Etty and
- the architect John Carr.
Unfortunately, it has not (so far) been possible to match the names with the correct facial likeness. However, further research is being undertaken and it is hoped that this frustrating situation can be remedied in the near future.
