York Observatory Roof in Museum Gardens p01

Photograph: Roof and open viewing slot of York Observatory, surrounded by shrubs and trees.

Image Description

The image shows the conical roof of York Observatory, glimpsed through the surrounding shrubs and trees in Museum Gardens, York.

The roof includes an oblong viewing slot with a hinged cover. When this image was taken, the cover was open (during the day) because the telescope inside was being used to allow members of the public to indirectly (and safely) observe the transit of Mercury across the the face of the Sun.
