Historic Latrines

Between tower 31 and the site of tower 30, a pair of historic latrines (toilets / urinals) have been set into York's city walls beside the wall-top walkway.

The age and origin of these facilities is uncertain and their position is rather odd. In addition to being very public, anyone using these facilities would have caused an obstruction on the walkway. The most likely explanation is that, at some point in history, a house was built up to and on top of the wall. This would then have been a perfect spot to dispose of one's unwanted remnants: through the wall, down the bank and into the moat / ditch. Look-out below!
