Bootham Bar was built in the 12th century to protect the city's western entrance. It now forms a key access point for the northern section of York's City Walls.

It lies directly above the site of north-western gateway into the Roman fortress (the 'Porta Principlais Dextra')and remnants of Roman wall associated with the south-western guard room are visible beneath a glass panel set into the floor of the adjacent cafe.
