To help those planning a real-world visit to the historic and fascinating City of York, each location (place) featured in the Gazetteer has been classified with a 'zone'.

These zones are a simplified and slightly modified version of the official 'character areas' (as used by the planning authorities) and they reflect real differences in land use, physical appearance and / or human activity.

Figure 1 (right or above) shows the relative position of the nine zones.
