The base of Davy Tower dates from the early 14th century. Its alternative name is 'The Tower of the Friars Minor', which referred to a nearby Franciscan Friary.

The southeast elevation of Davy Tower at the west end of the short section of city wall that runs alongside Tower Gardens. The cranes on Queen's Staith and the River Ouse are also visible (extreme left).

The stone-built sections of wall are the believed to be the oldest. The brick-built sections above date from circa 1750 and later.

During the Medieval Period, a chain was hung between Davy Tower and Skeldergate Postern Tower (on the opposite bank of the river) for defensive purposes and to control river traffic.
