Between tower 31 and the site of tower 30, a pair of historic latrines (toilets / urinals) have been set into the City Walls beside the wall-top walkway.

The pair of historic latrines on the northern section of York's City Walls.

The age and origin of these facilities is uncertain and their position is rather odd. In addition to being very public, anyone using these facilities would have caused an obstruction on the walkway. The most likely explanation is that, at some point in history, a building was erected here using the City Wall as part of its supporting structure. Under those circumstances (and in an era before modern sanitary standards), the moat / ditch on the other side of the wall would have been a perfect spot to dispose of one's bodily waste.
