Micklegate links Micklegate Bar with the city centre via Ouse Bridge. The blend of medieval, Georgian and more recent buildings create a unique atmosphere.

Micklegate is the main route into the city from the southwest and it boasts buildings that date from the medieval period to the modern day. Despite this architectural variety, the central part of the street has a definite Georgian feel. The well-preserved townhouses give the street an air of affluence and grandeur that is matched only by Bootham and St Saviourgate.

This image (taken a little closer to the city centre) shows a few more of the impressive Georgian and Victorian era buildings with frontages on Micklegate. The parking restrictions along this section of the street help to create a calmer and more attractive atmosphere.

For centuries, Micklegate has been the preferred route into the city for visiting nobility and royalty (see Micklegate Bar) and this further justifies the street's name: Micklegate is derived from the norse ‘Micklelith', meaning great street.
