The Red Tower was built circa 1490 to strengthen the city's defences where the south-eastern section of the wall-walk terminated at the edge of the King's Fishpond.

This location earns its 2-star rating partly because it provides access to a section of the wall-walk.

Practical Information

If you are following the Wall Walk in an anti-clockwise direction, walk along Foss Islands Road for 500 metres (550 yards) until you reach Laythorpe Tower, where the next section of wall-top walkway begins. (There was no need for a wall between the Red Tower and Laythorpe Tower as this area was defended by 'The King’s Fishpond'.)
