This steel-framed, timber-decked terrace and viewpoint was constructed in 2000 to open-up a previously inaccessible section of the River Ouse in the heart of York city centre.

The terrace was an integral part of a £5 million redevelopment scheme to convert a former print works into a modern cinema and leisure complex.

The redeveloped printworks site includes the former Yorkshire Herald building (considered a 'building of merit' by York City Council) and Ebor Hall (which is grade II listed). The redevelopment project was designed by London-based firm Panter Hudspith Architects and it won a Civic Trust Award in 2001.

Prior to the closure of the printworks, the huge rolls of paper needed for newspaper production were delivered to the site by river barge. During the redevelopment work, the river was used to transport construction materials to the site as road access was severely restricted.

Unfortunately, the terrace is not currently long enough to form a useful linear walking route beside the river. However, it does provide an interesting and attractive viewpoint.

Practical Information

The riverside terrace is best accessed via St Martin's Courtyard, which leads off Coney Street.
