This attractive magnesian limestone wall in Dean's Park once formed part of an arcade associated with the 12th century palace used by the Archbishops of York.

The arcade and the nearby remains of the 13th century chapel (now part of the Minster Library) are the only parts of the palace that remain visible above ground.

The arcade and adjacent railings are Grade I listed.

The arcade was restored in 1987 and it now serves as a memorial to the people who fought in the battle of Kohima during the Second World War.

Practical Information

The arcade / memorial can only be accessed when Dean's Park is open, although a distant view is possible from any of the three park gates.
