Dean's Park is part of the Minster Close. For centuries the area was the residence of the Archbishop of York, but it is now managed as a delightful public park.

This well-tended park beside York Minster includes plenty of seats and the level grass is ideal for a peaceful picnic during periods of warm dry weather.

The trees provide colour and visual interest all year round, plus welcome shade on a hot sunny day.

Spring blossom in the park, with the arcade of the former Archbishops' Palace (aka the Kohima Memorial) in the background. The raised area of grass (bottom-left) covers a water tank, installed in the Second World War to store water for fire-fighting use.

This stone tree seat beside the central path through the park is well worth seeking-out. In addition to being a pleasant place to sit for a while, it is decorated with a wide variety of carvings that showcase the skill of the Minster stone-masons (see Image 6).

Practical Information

The park is normally open between 7am and dusk each day, although this may vary during special events.
