The Artist's Garden is a pleasant outdoor space designed specifically to display temporary art installations and to host occassion outdoor arts events.

It was created in 2015-16 as part of a comprehensive refurbishment of York Art Gallery.

A brief history of the site now occupied by the Artist's Garden is provided on the page for York Art Gallery.

Practical Information

The Artist's Garden lies behind York Art Gallery and, during opening hours, it provides a useful link between Exhibition Square and Museum Gardens (via the Edible Wood garden). It can normally be accessed free of charge and it is normally open to the public whenever York Art Gallery is open.

Please note that the 'Foundation Myths' art installation (the two rows of yellow tree-stumps visible in Images 1 and 2) has been removed. The space is currently being used for an exhibition of steel sculptures by Michael Lyons (see Image 3).
