Chapter House Street follows the alignment of the Via Decumana (the road linking the northeast gate of the Roman fortress of Eboracum with the Principia).

The attractive old cobbles, sandstone flags and adjacent historic buildings give this attractive street a unique character. Standing here today, it is easy to imagine a cohort of sandal-shod Roman soldiers marching out of the fort enroute to a posting in the northeast.
