The Grade I listed Yorkshire Museum building was built during 1827-29 to house the Yorkshire Philosophical Society's geological and archaeological collections.

A sign attached to front facade of the Yorkshire Museum building reads:

"The Yorkshire Philospohical Society transferred the Yorkshire Museum and Gardens to the citizens of York on January 2nd 1961."

The building was transferred (via a Trust arrangement) to the City of York Council in 1961, who subsequently transferred it to the York Museums Trust in 2002.

The scope and extent of the museum's collection has continually expanded over the decades and one of the many highlights is the collection of artefacts and interpretation materials relating to everyday life in Roman, Anglo-Saxon and Medieval York.

The museum also has an astronomical collection, linked to the nearby York Observatory.
