The steps were constructed in 1874, when the three adjacent arches were pierced through York's City Walls to provide access to the new railway station.

This image shows two of the arches constructed by the Victorians to allow the road to pass through the south western section of the City Walls, plus the access steps (right) that link the wall-top walkway with this part of Station Road.

The landing at the top of the steps (see the bottom-left corner of Image 2) is a very popular spot for taking photographs and the two-star rating reflects the popularity of this location for 'selfies'.

Practical Information

These steps are the closest Wall Walk access point to the railway station. However, great care is needed when crossing the very busy road at the foot of the steps.
